Here’s what happened: 1️⃣ The Horror Profile Pics Imagine calling an Uber and seeing a distorted, pale, ghost-like face as your driver’s profile photo. These ”Ghost Drivers“ used terrifying images to scare passengers into canceling the ride immediately so they could pocket the cancellation fee. 2️⃣ The Phantom Rides Even if you didn‘t cancel, the car would never show up. Instead, the app would instantly mark the trip as ”started“ and then ”completed“ within a minute. Passengers were charged a base fare (8-15 RMB) for a ride that never existed. 3️⃣ Follow the Money This wasn’t just for small change. At the time, Uber China was offering massive bonuses to drivers (e.g., 300 RMB for 30 trips).
